Squaring The Circle Releases Debut Album Gyonk

Baltimore’s own Squaring The Circle recently released their debut album, Gyonk. The Charm City quartet has become a staple of the local live music scene, performing at almost every local festival or venue you can think of, including the renowned Hot August Music Festival. After many months of hard work in the studio, Squaring The Circle has presented us with a phenomenal debut record. Many, if not all, of the songs are familiar to the band’s loyal fan base. The whole album wreaks of the wry goofiness that we know and love from this band, while still presenting us with strong messages of hope, pain and loss. “VeeVee”, the soaring, epic instrumental tune sets the tone for the record, leading into the groovy “Gutterfunk,” which features raging solos from the guitar and keys. After a few vocal tunes that showcase some crafty songwriting, the band’s progressive opus, “Anacronym”, takes the spotlight. Next, the band blasts off into the ether with the fan favorite onomatopoeia, “Skibbity Gyonk Gyonk,” before closing out the record strongly with “Shouting Down the Silence.”

Described by their fans as “prog-funk”, Squaring The Circle is Carl Dougherty (guitar, vocals), Tyler Facinoli (keyboards), Dan Kutcher (bass) and Nate Shulkin (drums). The band has maintained its original lineup since its formation in 2014. Gyonk was recorded at Stages Music & Arts, Big Bang Audio and Titanic Bluebird, featuring Scott Paddock on saxophone and Rachel Ann Morgan on backing vocals. The album was engineered by Ronni Santmyer and Tony Kelly, mixed by Ronni Santmyer at Big Bang Audio, and mastered by Ben Majchrzak at Native Sound Recording in St. Louis, Missouri.

The band’s next Baltimore area appearance will be at the Hightopps Backstage Bash in Timonium, Maryland on September 6-7, 2019. Squaring The Circle will also be playing shows throughout the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast regions in support of the new album.
