Monday Music Quote #15
“Music is forever; music should grow and mature with you, following you right on up until you die.” – Paul Simon
I like this quote for a couple of reasons. First off, the obvious part is the beginning. “Music is forever…” Music has existed in the world around us since the dawn of time, pre-dating the existence of man by millions of years. A few years ago, I was fortunate enough to attend a workshop at Guitar Center with Victor Wooten. In making a point, he asked the audience, “How many of you want to have perfect pitch?” Everyone raised their hands. Then he asked, “Ok, how many of you know the notes of your cell phone ring?” Not a hand raised. He went on with his discussion, and at one point, a baby whined. Wooten stopped, sang the notes of the baby’s whine and said, “See? Ah, it’s so beautiful.” That experience has stuck with me ever since. That he could hear a sound that most people would think of as annoying and sing the notes back as if it was the most beautiful sound he had ever heard. Truly amazing.
The next part is an interesting one for me. While I’m sure Mr. Simon, one of the most prolific songwriters in history, is speaking from a musician’s point of view, I also take it into account from a listener’s point of view. I have made the point before that our musical tastes change over time, but that doesn’t mean that the artists we loved when we were 16 years old become any less important to us as we get older. Those artists play an important role in our development as human beings and as music lovers. Change is inevitable in our lives. As we grow and mature, so do artists and musicians, as well as the music that we love.
Have a wonderful week full of love, life and music!
